New Year’s Day

A Brooklyn tradition since 1903, the Coney Island Polar Bear club members swim in the waters of Coney Island starting in October and continue through the winter.  On New Year’s day each year thousands of people join the club and start their year with a refreshing and chilly swim.

I’ve wanted to photograph this event for years and finally this year, I woke up in time to get to the event.   It is Brooklyn at it’s best.  Hard to find parking but worth the struggle.  Characters galore, good-natured folks and the beautiful beach.

Hope you enjoy the pictures and that they give you a sense of the fun that everyone had.
